PARADIGMS IN WORLD HISTORY:
Global Studies & World History

A Conversation in the Discipline of the State University of New York
Friday-Saturday, March 3-4, 2000

The profession of History today, like the society around it, is being stretched and pulled by contradictory trends. Even as the explosion of knowledge--epitomized by the dramatic unfolding of the world wide web in recent years--has made intellectual breadth and coherence ever more difficult to achieve, the demand for global perspectives has become ever more insistent. Global studies in the high school and world history in the academy are both on the rise, but those who must teach them are too often trained as narrow specialists. Issues addressed by world historians, world systems researchers, students of globalization, and comparative civilizationists have resulted in a subject so vast that it is difficult to define, conceptualize, research and teach. The goal of this Conversation is to give multidisciplinary shape and rigor to this emergent field of study. The Conference will be held Friday to Saturday, March 3-4, at the Public Service Conference Center on the Binghamton University Campus.
