Certificate in the Teaching of American History The Certificate Program in the Teaching of American History provides training for teachers and prospective teachers that will prepare them to bring the latest interpretive thinking in the field of American History into secondary school teaching. At the same time, the program provides M.A. students in History an opportunity to prepare for a possible career in teaching at the secondary school level. The program has been stimulated by a "Teaching American History" grant from the U.S. Department of Education that has supported a three-year collaboration between Binghamton University and Broome-Tioga BOCES. The TAH grant aims to contribute to the improvement of the secondary school teaching of American History by contributing to teachers' substantive knowledge of American History. By building a long-term collaborative relationship between the University and local history teachers, the Certificate Program seeks to make a lasting contribution to teachers' professional development. The Certificate Program in the Teaching of American History requires the successful completion (with an overall average grade of B+) of three (4-unit) graduate courses in United States history, at least one of which must be drawn from a core, two-course sequence, "Issues in U.S. History." EDUC 507/ HIST 530A:
Issues in U.S. History before 1877 Courses beyond those
included in the core sequence may be drawn from any graduate courses in
U.S. history taught in the History Department. Course scheduling attempts
to meet the needs of employed teachers, with a significant proportion
of courses meeting at late afternoon and evening times. Beginning in the Summer of 2004, the Department plans to offer one graduate course in American History each summer, pending the successful application to the Department of Education for a second Teaching American History grant. A limited number of students may take these courses online. In addition, beginning in the fall of 2004, the "Issues in U.S. History" sequence will admit a limited number of distance-learning students on an experimental basis. These developments will permit students to complete a share of their work toward a Certificate in the Teaching of American History on a distance-learning basis. In the semester in
which a student is completing course requirements for the Certificate,
s/he should apply to Professor Thomas Dublin, Director of the Certificate
Program, who will ensure that the Certificate is awarded and noted on
the student's official transcript. Return to Certificate Programs Homepage
